Practical Information
Getting Around
Travel within CAR for this itinerary is not independent. All ground transport requires a private 4x4 with an experienced driver-guide, arranged through a specialized tour operator. Internal charter flights (highly recommended between Bangui and Bayanga) save immense time. Within Bangui and Bayanga, your guide will provide local transport. Self-driving is not advised due to security, road conditions, and logistical complexities.
Book Ahead
EVERYTHING. This trip is impossible without meticulous pre-booking. This includes: a reputable, specialized tour operator; all accommodation; all required permits ( for Dzanga-Sangha and gorilla tracking); internal charter flights; and guide/driver services for the entire week. Start planning 6-12 months in advance.
Packing Essentials
Lightweight, quick-dry clothing (long sleeves/pants), waterproof hiking boots, leech socks, rain jacket, binoculars, high-DEET insect repellent, malaria prophylaxis, complete first-aid kit, power bank/batteries, flashlight/headlamp, copies of passport/visa/insurance/vaccination records (Yellow Fever required), cash in USD and Euros for tips/incidentals.
Total Budget
$2500 - $3500+ per person (excluding international flights). This is a rough estimate. The final cost depends heavily on group size, choice of lodges, inclusion of charter flights, and operator rates. It is a high-cost destination due to its complexity.
Customize Your Trip
Budget Version
A true 'budget' version is not feasible for safe tourism in CAR. The only significant cost-saving measure is opting for the grueling 10+ hour drives between Bangui and Bayanga instead of charter flights, and staying in the most basic guesthouses in Bangui. However, core costs for mandatory guides, permits, and secure transport remain high.
Luxury Upgrade
Upgrade to exclusive use of a private vehicle and guide. Book the best suites at Ledger Plaza and Sangha Lodge. In Dzanga-Sangha, arrange for private gorilla tracking groups (if available) and additional guided activities like fishing on the Sangha River or extended forest walks with researchers. Ensure charter flights are included for all long transfers.
Family-Friendly
This itinerary is not suitable for young children due to security considerations, long travel days, and the physical demands of rainforest trekking. It could be considered for older, adventurous teenagers, focusing only on Bangui and Dzanga-Sangha with longer stays and reduced activity intensity. The Bai visit is more suitable than gorilla tracking for families.
