Central African Republic Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources and the nearest Central African Republic embassy or consulate before traveling, as requirements can change.
The Central African Republic (CAR) is a landlocked country in Central Africa that requires most international visitors to obtain a visa prior to arrival. Entry requirements are strictly enforced, and travelers should be prepared for thorough documentation checks at ports of entry. The main international gateway is Bangui M'Poko International Airport, though land border crossings from neighboring countries are also possible when security conditions permit. The immigration process in CAR can be complex and time-consuming. Travelers must present valid passports, visas, yellow fever vaccination certificates, and other supporting documents. Due to ongoing security concerns in various regions of the country, authorities may scrutinize travel plans carefully. It is essential to have all documentation properly prepared and to remain patient during processing. Travelers should also be aware that infrastructure limitations may affect the efficiency of immigration and customs procedures. Before planning travel to the Central African Republic, visitors should check current travel advisories from their home country, as many governments maintain warnings due to security concerns. Comprehensive travel insurance, pre-arranged accommodations, and a clear itinerary are strongly recommended. Registration with your embassy upon arrival is also advisable given the challenging security environment in parts of the country.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

The Central African Republic requires visas for almost all foreign nationals. Very few countries enjoy visa-free access, and most travelers must obtain a visa from a Central African Republic embassy or consulate before departure. The visa application process typically requires significant documentation and advance planning.

Visa-Free Entry
Varies by agreement, typically up to 90 days

Very limited visa-free access to the Central African Republic

Includes
Chad Republic of Congo Cameroon (CEMAC member states)

Visa-free access is primarily limited to citizens of Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) member states. All other nationalities require a visa. Even visa-exempt travelers must present valid passports and yellow fever vaccination certificates.

Visa on Arrival
Typically 7-30 days

Limited availability for certain nationalities under specific circumstances

Includes
May be available for some diplomatic or official passport holders
How to Apply: Visa on arrival is not reliably available for most travelers and should not be depended upon. Advance arrangements through a sponsor or official invitation are typically required.
Cost: Approximately 100-150 USD equivalent in CFA francs

Visa on arrival is highly unreliable and not recommended. Most travelers should obtain visas in advance to avoid entry denial or significant delays.

Visa Required
Tourist visas typically valid for 30-90 days

The vast majority of nationalities must obtain a visa before traveling

How to Apply: Apply at the nearest Central African Republic embassy or consulate. The process typically requires: completed application form, passport valid for at least 6 months, passport photos, yellow fever vaccination certificate, proof of accommodation, return flight ticket, invitation letter or travel itinerary, and visa fee. Processing time is typically 5-15 business days but can be longer. Some embassies may require in-person interviews.

This applies to citizens of: United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, all EU member states, most African nations (except CEMAC), Asian countries, and most other nationalities worldwide. Business visas require additional documentation including invitation letters from Central African Republic companies. Transit visas are available for stays under 72 hours but still require advance application.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival in the Central African Republic, travelers should expect thorough immigration and customs procedures. The process at Bangui M'Poko International Airport can take 1-3 hours depending on flight arrivals and staffing levels. Officials may conduct detailed questioning and document verification. Patience and courtesy are essential throughout the process.

1
Health Screening
Before immigration, travelers must present their yellow fever vaccination certificate (carte jaune). This is mandatory and non-negotiable. Temperature checks and other health screenings may be conducted depending on current health protocols.
2
Immigration Control
Present your passport, visa, completed arrival card, and supporting documents (hotel reservation, return ticket, invitation letter). Immigration officers will verify visa validity, passport expiration date, and purpose of visit. Be prepared to answer questions about your itinerary, accommodations, and contacts in CAR.
3
Baggage Claim
Collect your luggage from the baggage carousel. Be aware that facilities are basic and baggage handling can be slow. Keep valuables and important documents in carry-on luggage.
4
Customs Declaration
Complete customs declaration forms if carrying items to declare. All luggage may be subject to inspection. Officials may check for prohibited items, undeclared currency, and restricted goods. Cooperation with customs officials is essential.
5
Exit Airport
After clearing customs, proceed to the arrivals area. Arrange pre-booked transportation as airport taxis should be negotiated carefully. Avoid displaying valuables and maintain awareness of your surroundings.

Documents to Have Ready

Valid Passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay. Should have at least 2-3 blank pages for stamps and visa.
Valid Visa
Appropriate visa type for your purpose of visit (tourist, business, official). Must be obtained before arrival for most nationalities.
Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate
Mandatory for all travelers over 1 year of age. Must be valid (administered at least 10 days before arrival). This is strictly enforced and entry will be denied without it.
Proof of Accommodation
Hotel reservation confirmation or invitation letter from host. Should cover entire duration of stay.
Return or Onward Ticket
Proof of departure from CAR. Immigration may request to see confirmed flight bookings.
Sufficient Funds
Evidence of financial means to support yourself during your stay (cash, credit cards, bank statements).
Invitation Letter (if applicable)
For business visitors or those staying with residents, an official invitation letter from a Central African Republic entity or individual may be required.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Make multiple photocopies of all important documents (passport, visa, vaccination certificate) and store them separately from originals. Keep digital copies in secure cloud storage.
Carry your yellow fever vaccination certificate in an easily accessible location. You will need to present it before even reaching immigration.
Have contact information for your accommodation and any local contacts readily available. Immigration officers may verify this information.
Bring sufficient cash in euros or US dollars for visa fees, airport taxes, or other unexpected expenses. ATM availability is limited and credit cards are rarely accepted.
Remain calm, polite, and patient throughout the entry process. Answer questions clearly and honestly. Arguing or showing frustration can lead to additional delays.
Register with your embassy or consulate immediately upon arrival in Bangui. This is crucial for security updates and emergency assistance.
Pre-arrange airport pickup through your hotel or a trusted contact. Avoid unofficial taxi services and be cautious when leaving the airport.
Keep small denomination CFA franc notes for minor expenses. The currency is Central African CFA franc (XAF).

Customs & Duty-Free

Central African Republic customs regulations are designed to prevent smuggling and protect local industries. All travelers must complete customs declaration forms and may be subject to baggage inspection. Declaration of currency and valuable items is mandatory above certain thresholds. Customs officials have broad authority to inspect luggage and confiscate prohibited items.

1 liter of spirits or 2 liters of wine
For travelers 18 years and older. Amounts exceeding this limit are subject to duty.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco

Currency
Amounts exceeding 1,000,000 CFA francs (approximately 1,600 USD/EUR) or equivalent must be declared
Both upon entry and exit. Failure to declare can result in confiscation and penalties. Keep documentation of declared amounts for departure.

New items in original packaging or commercial quantities may be subject to duty. Expensive electronics, cameras, and professional equipment should be declared.

  • Plants, seeds, and agricultural products - Phytosanitary certificates may be required.
  • Pets and animals - Require health certificates, rabies vaccination proof, and import permits (see Special Situations section).

Health Requirements

The Central African Republic has strict health entry requirements due to the prevalence of tropical diseases. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for all travelers, and additional vaccinations are strongly recommended for health protection. Medical facilities in CAR are extremely limited, making prevention essential.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - Mandatory for all travelers over 1 year of age arriving from any country. Vaccination certificate must be valid (administered at least 10 days before arrival). Entry will be denied without valid certification.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A and B - Highly recommended due to sanitation conditions
  • Typhoid - Recommended for all travelers
  • Meningitis (Meningococcal) - Recommended, especially during dry season
  • Rabies - Recommended for travelers with outdoor activities or animal contact
  • Polio - Ensure routine vaccination is up to date
  • Tetanus-Diphtheria - Ensure routine vaccination is current
  • Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) - Ensure routine vaccination is complete
  • Cholera - May be recommended depending on current outbreaks and travel plans

Health Insurance

Comprehensive travel health insurance with emergency medical evacuation coverage is essential and strongly recommended. Medical facilities in CAR are severely limited, and serious medical conditions typically require evacuation to Europe or South Africa. Insurance should cover at least 100,000 USD in medical expenses and evacuation costs. Verify that your policy covers travel to CAR, as some insurers exclude high-risk destinations. Carry proof of insurance and emergency contact numbers at all times.

Current Health Requirements: Travelers should check current health requirements before departure, as protocols may change based on disease outbreaks. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended as CAR is a high-risk malaria zone year-round. Consult a travel medicine specialist 4-6 weeks before departure. COVID-19 requirements may still be in effect - check current testing, vaccination, or quarantine requirements with airlines and Central African Republic authorities. Bring adequate supplies of prescription medications, as they may be unavailable locally. Consider bringing a basic medical kit with antimalarials, antibiotics, and first aid supplies.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passports and visas. Yellow fever vaccination is required for children over 1 year of age. Children under 18 traveling without both parents should carry notarized parental consent letters in French, authorizing the travel. These letters should include: names and passport details of the child and parents, travel dates and itinerary, contact information, and notarized signatures. Birth certificates may be requested. Unaccompanied minors require special arrangements with airlines and immigration authorities. Adoption papers or custody documents should be carried if applicable. Solo parent travelers should carry evidence of sole custody or permission from the other parent.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets to CAR requires: valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days before travel but not more than 12 months prior), veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel, import permit from Ministry of Livestock (Ministère de l'Elevage) obtained in advance, and possible quarantine upon arrival. Dogs and cats should be microchipped. Contact the Central African Republic embassy for current requirements and permit applications well in advance (at least 2-3 months). Airlines have specific requirements for pet transport - confirm with your carrier. Veterinary services in CAR are extremely limited. Bring adequate supplies of pet food, medications, and health records. Consider carefully whether bringing pets is advisable given security and infrastructure challenges.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas are typically valid for 30-90 days. For longer stays, apply for visa extensions at the Direction Générale de la Documentation et de l'Immigration (DGDI) in Bangui before your current visa expires. Extension applications require: valid passport, current visa, proof of accommodation, financial means, reason for extension, passport photos, and extension fee. Processing can take several weeks. For stays longer than 3 months, a residence permit (carte de séjour) may be required. Business travelers and employees need work permits and appropriate visa categories. Overstaying your visa can result in fines, detention, or deportation. Long-term residents must register with local authorities and obtain necessary permits. Consult with the immigration office or a local sponsor/employer for specific requirements based on your purpose of stay.

Business Travelers

Business visitors require a business visa obtained before travel. Required documents include: invitation letter from Central African Republic company or organization (on official letterhead with details of business purpose, duration, and financial responsibility), letter from employer explaining business purpose, proof of business registration, and all standard visa requirements. Business visas may be single or multiple entry. For frequent business travel, consider applying for a multiple-entry visa valid for 6-12 months. Journalists and media professionals require special press visas and accreditation from Ministry of Communication - this process can take several months. NGO workers and aid personnel need appropriate visas and may require additional clearances from relevant ministries.

Photography and Filming

Photography of government buildings, military installations, airports, bridges, and official personnel is strictly prohibited without permission. Unauthorized photography can result in detention, confiscation of equipment, or arrest. Professional filming and commercial photography require permits from the Ministry of Communication and possibly other ministries. Apply well in advance through Central African Republic embassies. Drone usage is heavily restricted and generally prohibited without special authorization due to security concerns. Even tourist photography should be conducted discreetly and with respect for local customs. Always ask permission before photographing people. Sensitive areas and checkpoints should never be photographed.
